FAQ’s What is
Massage? The word “massage” comes from the Greek root “masso" -- to touch. Massage has been around for thousands of years with origins and styles from all parts of the world. Today it is the most popular spa treatment. I have never
had a massage before what should I expect? It is very relaxing and a good choice for first-time spagoers. It usually costs between $40-$100 at a spa, depending on the quality and experience of your therapist, how much time you book and the location and luxuriousness of the spa. A basic massage can last anywhere from 30-90 minutes long. It involves the stroking of skin and kneading of muscles. It is performed by a licensed massage therapist, who uses oil or lotion to lubricate the skin. You are usually nude but covered by draping of some sort. What is the
proper etiquette for massage/spa services, am I supposed to be nude? First-time spa-goers are often anxious about
whether or not to take their clothes off for a massage or body
treatment. So, what's the story with nudity at the spa? · You might change into a robe and slippers in the locker room or just undress in the therapy room. · When it's time for your spa treatment your therapist will leave the room, giving you time to undress or hang up your robe and slip between the linens on the massage table. Your therapist will knock before entering. · You are nude during the massage, but covered with drape of some sort. Only the part being massaged is exposed. · The most important factor is that you feel comfortable and are able to relax, so you can wear underwear if you wish however it is advised that you go without to get the full and best experience from your massage. Wearing an undergarment will hinder certain massage techniques and can get in the way of working your hips, glutes and low back. · European spas are more relaxed about nudity. They don't use elaborate draping techniques, and men and women typically take steam and sauna baths together, nude. · There are styles of massage like Thai Yoga Massage or reflexology where you typically stay clothed, but you should learn more about them before deciding if they are right for you. · If you're uneasy about nudity at the spa, getting a body treatment like a salt glow or a bodymask may not be the best choice for you if it is your first time at the spa. You are more likely to be exposed at some point during these types of treatments simply due to the nature of the treatments. · Many spas offer disposable panties for the body treatment. Sometimes they're optional, and sometimes the spa requests you wear them. What are Body treatments? Body treatments are essentially a "facial" for your whole body. It is just as important to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin on your body as it is the skin of your face. The most popular body treatment is a "body scrub" -- sometimes called a sea-salt scrub or salt glow or sugar scrub. This is an exfoliating treatment that takes place on a massage table covered with a sheet and a large, thin piece of plastic. As you lay on your stomach, the massage therapist rubs a mixture of sea salt or sugar, oil, and aromatics like lemon into your skin. This removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells and leaves your skin feeling velvety soft. Once your whole body is scrubbed, which takes maybe about15-20 minutes, the therapist drapes plastic or a bath sheet over you and goes away for about15- 20 minutes while you rest or he might use that time to give you a relaxing hand and foot reflexology session. When he returns you shower it all off without soap or your therapist may remove it with warm damp towels, leaving a nice coating of oil. It's an invigorating treatment, and it's a good idea to get your scrub before your massage if you're having both. Variations can come from the essential oils or scrub materials. A "body mask," which sometimes takes place after a scrub, involves the application of product over the entire body. Depending on the type of product used your mask could be a "detoxifying" treatment that stimulates your metabolic system, speeding its ability to carry away waste products, it may even treat cellulite and sometimes has a diuretic effect that aids in temporary weight reduction. If the product is very heavy cream that penetrates into your body, it's a "hydrating" treatment. Or the product may contain substances such as botanicals or amino-acid proteins which may aid in the formation of elastin in your skin which can create a firming and/or lifting effect on certain areas of your body. What is Thai Yoga Massage? Thai Massage is one of the hot “new” massages offered by many spas, but it was actually developed by Buddhist monks in Thailand as a healing modality 2,500 years ago. It uses passive stretching and gentle pressure along the body’s energy lines to increase flexibility, relieve muscle and joint tension and balance the body’s energy systems. It is both deeply relaxing and energizing. Thai massage typically takes place on a futon mat on the floor, and you may wear loose fitting or non-restrictive clothing such as work out apparel or a bathing suit. Some spas provide you with an outfit to wear. Others may ask you to bring or wear something you find comfortable. The therapist uses gentle compression, acupressure and stretching techniques to open up your body, often beginning with you legs. Some people say Thai massage is a little like doing yoga without any effort, because the therapist will push your body into various positions without any or very little work on your part. Thai massage can be done with clothes on, so some people recommend it if you feel uncomfortable with nudity during a massage. But my personal opinion is that it may not be the best choice for first-time spa-goers. Your therapist may literally uses his whole body, including his feet, to move your body into various positions, so in some ways it may feel even more intimate than say Swedish massage, where you lay on a massage table and are most likely covered with a drape of some sort. Thai massage has its roots in a spiritual tradition, and its purpose is to heal a person physically, emotionally and spiritually. What types
of massage do you do? Intuitive Integrated Massage, Chinese Meridian Therapy, Thai Yoga Massage, TuiNa and Qigong AnMo, Gua Sha, Swedish Massage, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue, Hot Stone Therapy, Reflexology, Trigger Point, Myofascial Release, Chair Massage. Usually, unless I have a specific request for something particular I am performing Intuitive Integrated Massage. I.I.M. is a fusion of techniques from the modalities listed above and many other that are not listed. The feeling of the situation and my client’s needs determine what techniques are used, what tempo, depth of pressure and what intention are given to the session. I don’t
want people to think I am spoiled, how often is too often to get a
massage? My personal opinion is that if one has the means why not get one everyday? I think most people would agree. However, a few people may consider massage to be simply a pampering experience and think that people who get them often are stuck up snobs who do not care about wasting money. This attitude just shows their ignorance of what regular massage has to offer in very real and important health benefits. In fact, massage is an amazing tool in preventative healthcare and you get the most benefit when it is part of your regular wellness routine. What are the
health benefits of massage?

What is
Qigong (Chee goong)? Qigong is an art and science of ancient Chinese origin, which is at the core of modern Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), martial arts, and many Eastern spiritual disciplines. Its practice and theory revolve around the concept of cultivating and maintaining the healthy flow and circulation of qi (i.e., vital energy/life force, vital substances and informational signals). The practice generally consists of slowly flowing movements, breathing exercises, meditation, massage techniques, and conscious intent, all used for the purpose of achieving an integrated adjustment of the mind, body, and spirit. The benefits of using qigong are enormous. It strengthens, stretches, and relaxes your body, energizes your mind, enhances mind/body connection, increases blood flow, maintains bone health, regulates hormone production, and massages your internal organs, keeping you healthy and youthful. What is it
that you do as a Mind/Body Coach? I help people train themselves physically,
mentally, emotionally and/or spiritually or any combination thereof.
Depending on a person’s goals I can teach them methods they may
be able to use to enhance or improve most any aspect of themselves they
desire. For example if
someone wants to lose weight or become a better athlete or improve
efficiency of their performance I can teach them ways to increase their
energy levels, enhance mind/body coordination, train functional muscle
and provide them with tools and services they can use to speed up their
recovery time enabling them to train harder and more often, most
importantly I can help them find the strength and resolve within
themselves to do it. Or if someone wants to improve their job performance I can
help them learn methods they can use to increase mental acuity with
improved focus and concentration without burning themselves out or over
stressing. I also find it
to be especially rewarding to help people reconnect with others by
helping them improve relationship skills on both a personal and
professional level. My most
common request for these services come from people who simply wish to
live happier healthier lives. Whatever
their needs or wants I use the training and knowledge I have gained as a
Certified Qigong Instructor (by both Grand Master Wei Zhong Foo of the
Da Dao Chan Gong Society and by the China Academy of Traditional Chinese
Medicine), a Certified Mind/Body Fitness Specialist (National Exercise
and Sports Trainers Association) and a black belt with more than 20
years of martial arts training and study of eastern spiritual
disciplines to help them attain their goals.
The methods I coach people with consist of various forms of
meditation, massage/acupressure, physical activity and exercise, breath
exercise, guided imagery and visualization, introspective self
actualization, and a variety of other Mind/Body practices. |
